¡The great aventura!

¡Hola a todos! (see below for version in English)

Como ya saben muchos de ustedes, cuando Julián termina con su doctorado en diciembre, nos vamos en auto desde EE.UU. a Buenos Aires. Sip, leíste bien, ¡nos vamos en auto! O, mejor dicho, ¡nos vamos en nuestra súper-camioneta, una Nissan 4x4 del 1996! Estaremos saliendo tipo finales de enero/principios de febrero, y primero pasaremos a visitar unos amigos en California y Arizona. Tenemos planeado ir por Baja California y luego tomar el ferry desde La Paz a Mazatlán en el continente. De ahí en adelante, no tenemos planes fijos, más que ir por la carretera panamericana (mandaremos la camio por barco desde Panamá a Colombia o Ecuador para no cruzar el Darién). Queremos conocer gente, lo más que podamos de la cultura, probar distintos tipos de comida y ver la naturaleza, pero más que nada, queremos tomarlo con calma para poder realmente sentir el espiritu de la zona en que estamos.

¡No te imaginas la cantidad de gente que nos han dicho que han soñado con hacer este viaje! Y aunque nos encantaría juntarnos con todos los amigos y hacer el viaje juntos, hay que reconocer que la gran mayoría no van a poder. Así que, como pequeña alternativa, queremos involucrarlos lo más posible, y pedirles que nos den consejos acerca de dónde ir (¡y dónde no ir!), sobre todo si han visitado lugares que les hayan gustado. Obviamente, si vives por donde pasarémos, nos encantaria pasar a visitarte y recordarnos de los viejos tiempos. ¡Por fin, vamos a poder ver a muchos amigos que ya llevamos años prometiendo que los vamos a visitar!

Hemos configurado un mapa de Google Maps para juntar todas la sugerencias que nos hacen los amigos. Aún si no tienes una recomendación, por ahí te conviene revisar el mapa para encontrar sitios que quizá algún día quieras visitar. :-D Y si vives en Centro o Sur América, ¡ahora tienes una buena excusa para hablar de todas las maravillas de tu país!

Ya que nadie tiene tiempo de sobra, queremos hacer que nos puedas hacer recomendaciones de una forma rápida y fácil. Así que, existen cuatro opciones. Puedes:

1. Mandarnos tus recomendaciones por email.

2. Llamarnos por teléfono o por Skype.

3. Dejarnos una recomendación en este sitio Web, siguiendo el enlace “Make recommendations (no map) - Hacer recomendaciones (sin mapa)” en la sección de arriba de “Enlaces rápidos” o el enlace “Recomendaciones” al final de esta sección. ¡No te olvides de dejar tu nombre!

4. Ir a Google Maps (ver enlace de arriba) y agregar un pinchito en nuestro mapa, junto con el nombre del lugar y una pequeña descripción de qué hay para ver/hacer, etc. No te olvides de incluir tu nombre en la descripción, o no tendremos forma de saber quién dejó la sujerencia. Para obtener instrucciones detallades de cómo acceder y modificar el mapa, haz clic en el enlace “How to use Google Maps - Cómo usar Google Maps” en la sección de “Enlaces rápidos” arriba.

Hi everyone!

As many of you already know, once Julian finishes his PhD at Oregon State University in December of 2007, we’re planning on packing up our trusty 1996 4x4 Nissan pickup truck (see left, soon to be 'Home Sweet Home' for several months) and driving to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Starting in late Jan/early Feb, we’re planning on driving down through Baja California, Mexico and taking the ferry over to Mazatlan on the Mexican mainland, and then continuing south on the Pan-American highway. Other than shipping the truck around the Darien Gap (between Panama and Colombia) on a container ship (we’ll probably fly to South America), we don’t really have any set plans. The goal of our trip, above all, is to have a fantastic time and get to know as much as we can about the people, culture and nature/wildlife of the countries we’ll be passing through, in as relaxed a way as possible. We don’t want to just see these places – we want to feel them too.

If I had a nickel for the number of times people have said, “Oh, I’ve always dreamed of doing that trip!” when we told them about our plans, I could probably finance the whole trip using that money alone! So, unless you can join us, here’s your chance to live a little dream through us by giving us recommendations for places we should go (or not go!) and things we should do. Obviously, if you have had personal experiences in any of these places, it would be great to hear what you liked and didn’t like. If you live along the way, we’d love to stop by and say Hi (we’ll finally get to catch up with many friends we’ve been promising to visit for years now! Yipee!)!

We’ve set up a trip map at Google Maps to post all of the suggestions we get. Even if you don’t have any recommendations, you may want to check out the map for great places to visit yourself in the future. Obviously, if you live in Central or South America, this is a great way to brag a bit and point out some of the fantastic things about your country!

Since nobody seems to have any extra time these days, we’d like to make it as easy and fast as possible for you to leave your comments. You can either:

1. Email them to us.

2. Call us on the phone or with Skype.

3. Leave recommendations on this website by following the "Make recommendations (no map) - Hacer recomendaciones (sin mapa)" link under "Quick Links" to the right, or the "Recommendations" link at the end of this post. Don't forget to leave your name, or we'll have no way of knowing who left the recommendations!

4. Go to Google Maps (see Quick Links above), find your location, and leave us a pin with your name, the name of the place and a place description and/or recommendations. For detailed instructions on how to access and update our Google map, see the "Go to our Google Map - Ir a nuestro Mapa de Google" link in the "Quick Links".

We can't wait to hear from you and see all the places you suggest!

How to use Google Maps / Cómo usar Google Maps

Click on the link "Go to our Google Map" or go to http://maps.google.com/. Then click on "Sign in" (underlined in red in the image below). To see larger versions of the screencapture images, just click on them.

Haz clic en el enlace "Ir a nuestro Mapa de Google" o vete a http://maps.google.com/. Luego, haz clic en "Sign in" (subrayado de rojo en la imágen siguiente). Para ver una versión más grande de la imágen de captura de pantalla, simplemente haz clic en la imágen.

Click on the "My Maps" tab next to the Search Results tab.
Haz click en el la ficha "My Maps" al lado de la ficha "Search Results".


Check the box next to "Nuestro viaje / Our Trip".
Marcar la casilla al lado de "Nuestro viaje / Our Trip".


Click "Edit".
Haz clic en "Edit".



Click on the underlined Placemarker button.
Haz clic en el botón subrayado.


A pop-up window will appear.
Aparecerá una ventana emergente.


Fill in the location's name, your name and your recommendations, and then press OK and Save. Repeat for as many places/recommendations as you want to make. When you're done, press Done and don't forget to Sign out (top right corner). Thanks!

Rellene la ventana con el nombre del lugar, tu nombre y tus recomendaciones, y luego pulse OK y Save. Repita cuantas veces quieras para otros lugares/recomendaciones. Cuando termines, pulse Done y no te olvides de pulsar Sign out (esquina superior derecha). ¡Gracias!
